Student comments

The master's programme Environment, Climate Change and Health was initiated in winter semester 2022/2023. To give prospective students a better understanding of the master's programme from a student's point of view, some of the programme’s current students are sharing their stories on this page.

Lilli Oberndörfer
I am originally from Hamburg, where I started a training as a pharmaceutical technical assistant and completed my bachelor of geosciences. Since my bachelor was already very interdisciplinary oriented, I wanted to start an interdisciplinary study again for my master as well. My interest in medicine, which had already been sparked by my education, led me to look for a master's degree that would combine both my medical and scientific interests. In doing so, I found what I was looking for with this master's in Bayreuth! I hope that this study will give me the knowledge and the ability to make a lasting change and to research or work in this still (here in Germany) rather little known topic and to bring it closer to the population. In addition, I would like to find out with this study, how I can make a contribution to preserve the health of the people and that of our planet. So far, I am very satisfied with my first semester at the University of Bayreuth. Bayreuth is very nice as a student city and there are always exciting events (both on and off campus) to go to. As for the first semester, most of the lectures so far have been focused on the basics of medicine and natural sciences related to climate change and the environment, but this has not made them any less exciting. There are also useful soft skills learned in additional courses that you will also need later for your professional/academic career. I am curious to see what the next semesters will bring and what I will focus on. In general, many of the course topics are reflected in everyday life and in the current debates, which makes it a highly topical and exciting course of study.

I was really excited to pursuit and apprehend the mystery of the environmental changes and it consequences that we are currently facing in 21st century. As of the main factor, the climate change is hitting the planet faster than it has been guessed before and causing the environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, diseases prevalence and so on. This master program has really put me on the path to go deeper in the field and understand what I was expecting to learn. Currently I am in the second semester, I am perfectly satisfied with this informative and interdisciplinary field which has coached me through my goal. I am also pleased to meet with the new people and new culture from all over the world in Bayreuth university which make our moment memorials and unforgettable.

I decided to study ECCH because I want to actively do something about climate change with up-to-date and well-founded knowledge. Since climate change affects all of us and can only be mitigated through cooperation between different disciplines, I particularly like the interdisciplinary character of the programme. For example, in the first semester, I learned a lot about environmental economies and the effects of climate change on health. We also worked on our own project ideas in the Project Management course. You don't have to worry if you don't have a lot of prior knowledge in some of the disciplines - you are picked up where you are. Since your fellow students come from different disciplines in which they completed their Bachelor's degrees, you can complement and learn from each other. As a study environment, I really like the University of Bayreuth because it is a campus university. You get to know new people quickly and the distances are very short. There are also many extracurricular activities, such as the university choir or numerous university sports courses.
